Page 1 of 2 Viterbo is the capital of Viterbo province, approximately 100 kilometers (60 mi) north of Rome. It is famous as "the town of the Popes": the Popes had a country residence there, which may still be seen; and it thus became the site of important church councils, and in particular of the first conclave. Its beautiful historical center was conceived in the Middle Ages and preserves the essential style of the medieval architecture of central Italy, with many palaces. The town hosts the Italian gold reserves, an important Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Tuscia and a wide thermal area.
History
It was once presumed to have been founded by Etruscans, but the source of this belief, still not eradicated from the popular mind, was the work of one of its more colorful natives, a medieval forger named Annio.
EVENTS:
The transport of the "Macchina di Santa Rosa" takes place every year, on September 3, at 9 o'clock in the evening. The Macchina is an artistic illuminated bell-tower with an imposing height of 30 m. It weighs between 3.5 and 5 tonnes and is made of iron, wood and papier-mâché. At the top of the tower, the statue of the Patron Saint is enthusiastically acclaimed by the people in the streets of the town centre, where lights are turned off for the occasion. One hundred Viterbesi men (known as the Facchini) carry the Macchina from Porta Romana through the major streets of Viterbo, concluding with a strenuous ascension up to the Piazza di Santa Rosa, its final resting place. Each Macchina has a life span of five years, after which a new one is built.

La Chiesuola lies 600 mt. above sea level, near an ancient exitinct volcano. Position, weather, sea within easy reach, vegetation, history, nearby thermal spas and sporting centres help people meet and relax. You can take romantic walks, trek, ride mountain bikes, pick up mushrooms and chestnuts, make archeological excursions. Villa Lante, Bagnaia, is a masterpiece od Renaissance art. It is situated 3 miles away from Viterbo, in a place where traditional life is still alive. It is well worth a visit, and you can even stop here for a long time to see many surrounding villages such us Vitorchiano, Bomarzo, Soriano, San Martino al Cimino, Caprarola, Bagnoregio, lake Vico and the town of Viterbo, with is 13th century quarter of San Pellegrino and the Papal Palace. The butterfly Bed and Breakfast is located in the new district of Bagnoregio, the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure . Bagnoregio is situated half-way between Orvieto and Viterbo, 18 km and 27 km respectively from Bagnoregio. A mere 10 km away is Lake Bolsena, and 100km’s away, within an hour and a half’s drive ,Rome can be reached, either by A-1 or the Cassia, the State route. At about 1 km away, tourists can admire and intensely experience the enchanting atmosphere of Civita di Bagnoregio, a truly unique medieval town where only the song of nature exists, surrounded by the characteristic Valley of the Calanchi (argillaceous erosion furrows, whose aspect and form undergo continual changes and crumbling, due to wind and rain).

B&B Faleri
The B&B Faleri is in the centre of Montefiascone but in a quiet and calm position. Every room has a TV and from the window you can enjoy a nice view of the valley of Lake Bolsena and the medieval part of Montefiascone. The owner, who personally has overseen the reconstruction of the house, speaks English and French. Montefiascone is in the centre of a rich naturalist/cultural area. From here you can reach easily many archaeological Etruscan sites, or visit medieval and renaissance, buildings and churches. But if you prefer, you can enjoy the benefits of the thermal baths at Viterbo, or sports, in the open air on the beaches of Lake Bolsena. Many local fairs, festivals and parades in costume mean you won't have a moment free, should you so wish.
